Snowy Wedding in the Canadian Rockies

Rimrock-Resort-Hotel-wedding

Elaine and Christie said I do during a snowy day in Banff, Canada where an intimate group of friends and family gathered to celebrate their union. Getting married in the Canadian Rockies was just what this couple dreamed of, a pair who shares a love of the outdoors. But what a treat when they discovered snow on their wedding day in September!

We asked the newlyweds to share with us the story of their big day and how it came to be. “We were inspired by the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. We were inspired by the beauty and simplicity of nature itself. We love hiking and boating, just being in nature makes us happy and that’s why we decided to go with a nature theme and with nature colors.”

“The first time we saw each other in our dresses standing out among the beautiful trees all of our worries about weather or anything else just melted away. Everything you envision how the first look would be can’t compare to the emotions you feel the first time you see the love of your life standing in front of you. It is a rush, an energy, breath taking moment, sensory overload and overwhelming love! In that split second it reaffirms that feeling you have in your soul that this is the person I want to spend my days with. My soul mate!”

“Our absolute favorite wedding day detail was the surprise snow! We were expecting rain and it turned into something very magical.”

“Being surrounded by close family and friends in such an intimate gathering could not have been more perfect,” shared Christie. “It was an overwhelming feeling of emotions!”

“The reception decorations were stunning and really fit our outdoorsy style.”

We often ask couples if they experienced any challenges planning a wedding away and of course, the weather was part of this story! On the day of the wedding, Elaina got up and headed back to the Banff house and I waited for my parents to arrive. We woke up to a very cold and rainy morning. It actually wasn’t the rain that worried us the most though; it was the fact that it was so foggy you couldn’t see anything! This meant no beautiful mountain/lake backdrop. I’m getting calls from Elaina who’s been in touch with Postcard Weddings on other contingency plans because it started to sleet! The makeup artist and stylist did their magic on us and we felt beautiful and ready to meet our soon to be wife. The weather started to change and the forecast for the day was looking like several inches of snow! Our planners again went into action mode and reorganized all the wedding teams to have the wedding at the Rimrock Hotel. There is no way all the pieces would have fit together as perfectly as they did if we didn’t have them working their magic in the background. Elaina and I were able to enjoy each moment and it totally took all the pressure of the re-arrangements off our shoulders. We got in our cars and headed to the first photo shoot.”

Snow Wedding Inspiration

Well, I don’t know about you but I just love winter weddings. There is just something so magical and intriguing about a wedding where the snow is falling, the fireplace is crackling, and the hot chocolate is being sipped. Speaking of snow, it obviously wouldn’t be a  winter  wedding without a sweet picture of you and your significant other in the snow! A sweet caressing photo in the snow will do but perhaps you want to be more fun and play in the snow. Check out that last photo in the set. Talk about a way cool and creative photo with the sled! I love that idea! Oh and make sure to get your bridesmaids in on the action too! Just remember to be quick, I would’t want you to freeze out there!

A White Wedding in Vermont

vermont destination wedding

Lindsay and Patrick chose Morrisville, Vermont for their white wedding set to the backdrop of snow.  As we head into spring, this may be our last chance for a snowy reception!  Lindsay and Patrick shared with us their story.

Lindsay and I met in college and have spent much time in Vermont over the past eight years.  We chose to have the reception at the Maple House Inn which is located in the quaint little town of Morrisville, just outside of Stowe, VT.  The owners of the inn, Rick and Lynn, worked extremely hard to make the celebration as amazing as it was.”

For the sake of accommodating all of our friends and family, we decided to split the celebration into two nights: the ceremony was open-invitation which was followed by a reception for family; the following day was a New Year’s Eve party.  We wanted to create an experience for our friends beyond the traditional wedding reception because they had supported us for so many years.  The choice, however, wasn’t entirely selfless, as they also tend to cultivate a hell of a good time wherever they are.  We couldn’t think of a better way to bring in the New Year than with these friends and family, and directly on the heels of getting married.”

“The unique layout of the Maple House Inn helped us plan the event and disperse the amount of guests on both nights.  The cocktail hour was held in the indoor pool room which is adorned with a fiber-optic display of the milky way across the ceiling.  The movie theatre, which is reminiscent of an opera house with its vaulted ceiling, gold textured wallpaper and velvet seating, hosted a looped slideshow of friends and family.  The main room of the house provided a simplistic, yet elegant, setting for the seated dinner with its lit, coffered ceiling, snow-covered windows, an immense stone fireplace, and a centralized foyer of glass doors which housed the delicious cake made by a family friend.”

“After a delicious meal from Rick’s Catering, everyone pitched in to change the room into a dance floor.  This little project brought the families together in a unique way, and it got people up and moving.  Lindsay’s brother, Colby, passed around apple cider moonshine and rye whiskey, which was a great help in motivating people to the dance floor.”

“New Year’s Eve, on the other hand, became a celebration unto itself with family and friends, ice luge and dancing, conversation and gliding across the pool on inflatable swans.  We feel blessed to have had a wedding celebration extend two nights to include everyone we love and are thankful to so many people for helping to make it happen and for supporting us.”

Ice Blue Winter Weddings

Blue is an ideal color for a destination wedding, it goes great in the tropics, overlooking the big blue ocean or open sky, and it even works wonders for a winter destination wedding in the snow.  Ice blue makes a pretty palette for that wedding high in the mountains, on the edge of a frozen lake, or even in a penthouse at a city chic winter wedding in London or NYC.

St. Simons Island, Georgia Destination Wedding

st simons island georgia wedding

Dave and Emily headed south for their domestic destination wedding under beautiful old oak trees and Spanish moss hanging overhead.  Emily tells us their story.  “Since we were having a destination wedding, we needed a location that was convenient for our guest that would be flying in from New York and Dave’s hometown, Scranton, Pennsylvania. We needed a selection of Hotels and a fun atmosphere for them to spend there weekend.”  And so the couple opted for St. Simons Island in Georgia.  Planning while the bride resided in Atlanta and the groom in the Navy at St. Mary’s made for some unique challenges, but they found just the right place and the rest is well, history.

Emily and Dave wed at Epworth By The Sea.  “The location was selected for several reasons, style, beauty, religious beliefs and convenience. Dave and I knew we wanted to get married outdoors. We wanted a venue that was rustic, yet modern with an elegant twist. The first time we walked through the grounds at Epworth By the Sea, we knew we had found the right place! The beautiful old oak trees with the Spanish moss hanging off of them, and Frederica River to the west painted the perfect wedding day photo. We really didn’t need to do a lot of decorating to the outside, we could let nature could speak for itself. The sun peeked through the Spanish moss so perfectly and the reflection of the water off the river with the cool breeze was enough to get us excited.”

“The inspiration of our wedding was definitely influenced by our individual personalities, our first date meeting, and recreating aspects of special moments in our dating life. I loved modern elegant designs, while my husband is the lover of anything rustic and outdoorsy.”

“Dave’s grandmother had given him rosary beads from where his family was originally from Sicily, Italy. She gave them to him before she passed away. On our first date before we departed Dave gave them to me and said that they would always be there to watch after me since he couldn’t be.  Our grandmothers both played an integral part in our lives. I had the rosary beads wrapped around the stems of my bouquet to symbolize our spiritual relationship together and in Remembrance of Dave’s grandmother.”

“My grandmother had given us on Dave’s first trip down to meet her, her old wedding ring. She blessed us and said, “Do with it what you may” and she looked at me and said, “He is the one!” Dave surprised me and had the ring melted down reshaped, dipped into white gold set with a total 2 carat center diamond and diamond insets all around the band. It was a design that I have showed him from several different rings combined. An elegant mock triple band! He had the original diamonds in the band that my grandmother gave us made into earrings that he gave me at the rehearsal dinner to where on our wedding day. “This was my something old, something new.”

Emily and Dave met online and dated a year before he popped the question.  “Dave proposed exactly a year to our first date, August 28, 2010! We were on our way to Athens, Georgia to eat at my favorite Restaurant, Carrabba’s and he stopped at this field of horses in Madison Georgia. We used to always stop here to pet the horses and just ride to look at the beautiful country and rolling hills. It was rare that all of the horses ever came up to the fence on a given day, but all 15 of them were grazing right near the fence. The sun was setting, I was petting the horses and Dave grabbed my hand and, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!”

For the reception, guests headed indoors where personal details lay at every turn – including a guest photo guest book!

The centerpieces and table decor varied from table to table, but all had that cozy winter wedding feel.  “I used a rotation of four table centerpieces. Mercury glass ornaments of different shapes & sizes with snow dust, tree branches hung with tea lights sitting in a clear glass hurricane vase filled up with coffee beans, and 3 vanilla candles at different sizes on a silver charger plate.”

Who doesn’t love a hot chocolate bar at the end of an evening?!?  This pair incorporated elements from their relationship into the big day and that included hot cocoa!  “Some of the pieces that really inspired me for our wedding were the Hot Chocolate Bar that we went to on our first date. Since we decided to get married in January and have an outdoor wedding, we thought what a perfect way for our guest to warm up over a CYO (Create your own) Hot Chocolate Bar. We did have a hot chocolate menu at each place setting when the guests arrived, so if you weren’t creative you could choose a hot chocolate recipe from that. The recipes were something we came up with to reflect our love for chocolate and for each other. The recipe names were: A little Smore love, Mint 2 Be, Southern Yankee (for my husband since he loves the south but grew up in the North), and Hitched.”

And for the traditional dessert, both bride and groom got just what they wanted!  “I wanted to bring Dave’s love for the outdoors into our reception. For the groom’s cake we went with cheesecake since that is his favorite. We had custom oak tree cake stands made. I found pictures online and we asked one of our family friends with a wood shop to build them and seal them with polyurethane. It was important that the wedding not be all about me so these fit my husband to a tee, because one of his favorite passed times is hunting.”

Everything from this wedding had special, personal meaning to the bride and groom.  Her something blue was worn by her mother in her own wedding!  “The blue silk garter was worn by my mother when she was married back in the 1970. My great Aunt made this for her before her wedding day and stored it in an old blue powder puff tin with a note. My mom left it for me to where in the same tin with a personal note. I too plan on doing the same!”
