An Elegant Same Sex Destination Wedding on St. Thomas

Amanda and Colleen traveled from Kansas City to sunny the Caribbean for their destination wedding on St. Thomas.

Colleen shared with how this big day came to be after a proposal that was meant to be. “An unexpected relationship will become permanent”. It is the most relevant fortune that has ever come out of a cookie, and it came 7 days after I knew I would marry her.

For some reason, I anxiously waited exactly 1 year from that date to ask her to spend the rest of her life with me.

I placed the ring box on the bench between us and asked her to open it. Inside the box was a fortune I had received 51 weeks prior.

Then it was time to plan their destination wedding on St. Thomas.

We chose St. Thomas because we wanted to get away to the Caribbean – a far cry from our home in Kansas City and because there was no passport required which made travel easy for our guests.

Colleen shared with us a favorite moment from their destination wedding on St. Thomas:

I think it’s difficult for me to decide what my favorite moment from our wedding day is. I have it narrowed down to two moments. The first is our first look. All day I was anxious and felt like I could hurl. Then, we got set up to do our first look and I reached out and felt Amanda’s hand and knew everything would be okay.

I think Savanah actually captured my face when I turned around and saw her for the first time. I would say it was pure joy. All of my anxiety just fell away and I felt a sense of sheer excitement.

When I asked Amanda what her favorite part of our wedding was and she said “I liked being there with you and promising to be your wife”… One more thing I love about my wife: she’s concise.

Our wedding ceremony itself was intimate. We only invited our immediate family and wanted to keep everything small and simple. We did not want anything extravagant just us.

My other favorite moment was when Bill pronounced us wife and wife.

We have waited so long for that moment and when it finally came it was like a rush of joy and relief and love all at once… if that makes sense at all. It just felt like I finally had everything I wanted in life.

We worked with Amber at Blue Sky Ceremony and wanted fun and tropical, inspired by the ocean. While searching Pinterest, I fell in love with the blue orchids used in our bouquets. And during a trip to the island, fell in love with the jetty and palm trees at Sapphire beach.

Everything just came together from there.

Sometimes, like in a lot of relationships, it has felt like us against the world so we just wanted our wedding ceremony to be about us and only us. When we got home to Kansas City we did have a reception with family and friends. They traveled from near and far to help us celebrate everything that makes us feel so lucky to be together.
