Where to Wed in Cartagena: El Baluarte

If you’re looking for a truly romantic wedding destination with an old-world vibe, then look no further than the fantastic city of Cartagena, Colombia in South America.  It’s magical, absolutely magical.  The old part of the city is surrounded by ancient fort walls to protect and preserve…the bright colors of the town and all its charm from centuries past.  But this South American city is also on the beach, the Caribbean actually.  So for the best of both worlds in Cartagena, consider saying “I do” to a destination wedding ON the wall, you never have to choose inside or out.  A perfect spot with ocean views and cityscapes behind it is El Baluarte, a restaurant rooftop, or shall we say wall-top, with 360 degree views of all the charm of the city and sea.

You can host your ceremony overlooking the ocean and then dine under the stars with a band (or DJ) perched up on a stage built into one of the ancient structures.  It doesn’t get more unique than this!

And Cartagena has all the best wedding vendors you could ask for, no need to worry about talent here, you’ll find their skill and experience rivals anyone here in the states, but arguably with more warmth in their welcome.

El Baluarte has some of the best views in the city and the city is one to certainly consider for your big day.  If you want an exotic destination wedding location, a romantic setting to say your vows, and an epic view from day to night on your wedding day, then we found it for you – in Cartagena.  Safe travels!

A Beautiful Beach Wedding in Brazil

brazil destination wedding ideas

Benjamin and Thailis had a truly global destination wedding in beautiful Brazil!  The groom from New York, the bride from Brazil, the pair planned the event from their home (and where they met) in China!  The decided to host a week long celebration with all their friends and family staying together at a private villa about two hours south of Recife, Brazil in a remote beach town.  We asked the couple about their selection.  “The reason for choosing the place was the size of the house, was big enough to have all our friends staying together for the wedding and carnival, plus that our friends were coming from all over the world so we wanted everyone to meet in advance and have a great time.”

With a week to play, the group not only celebrated the big day but also planned a trip to Carnival, a boat ride to nearby island, day trips to various beaches and of course, lots of lounging around the villa.

“The challenge was organizing the wedding from China, specially February 14th, carnival had all the hotels already booked.”

“One of our friends surprised us so much bringing his helicopter and giving us a ride right before the ceremony, the view was so beautiful from the top and the feeling was amazing.”  How fun!!

Then, for the ceremony, the couple opted to say “I do” in the evening.

“We didn’t think much about theme or decor, actually we decided to keep it clean and soft looking, we wanted the location to be the focal point since the place was so pretty and charming.”

“Notable and interesting part of the wedding party was the couple’s first dance, which was organized during the week that we stayed at the villa, one of our friends helped us to coordinate the dance, some of our best friends danced with us and it was followed by fireworks.”

Destination Wedding in Uruguay, South America

uruguay destination wedding

Sabrina and Ryan met on a cruise ship they were both working on at the time.  Ryan tells us about their first encounter that ultimately lead them down the aisle in Uruguay!  “We used to walk passed each other every now and then, but I could never stop her to talk as she was always walking like a ferrari. It was in a costume party that I had my first “approach.” That night at the end of the party, I knew I had to make a move, or say something, so I said: “what are the chances that you would go for me?” and she replied: “what’s the point, I have to leave in 2 days time”. Then it hit me, she was signing off the ship, and I probably would never see her again. So the next day, I was in my cabin, and the phone rings. I answer, and Anna (Sabrina´s roommate) says: “Sabrina says you should come out with us tonight”, to which I replied in exactly 0.6 split seconds: “yeah sure, let me know, and I will be there”. That night, which was Sabrina´s last night on the cruise ship, we finally got swept off our feet in one of the stops the ship did in Rio de Janeiro were we hung out with two other friends. At first we thought that night was going to be the last one… but it didn´t, destiny (and our will!) made that we meet again in Uruguay. That evening was the beginning of our unfogettable adventure that first took us to Argentina, then South Africa, and now finally to Uruguay.”

So needless to say, picking their destination wedding location would be a worldly task.  “We were looking for the best sunset in South America to share with family & friends from South Africa, Scotland, Brazil, and Norway.  We  loved the idea of having a wedding on the beach in front of our friends and family.”  And this was it!

Sabrina wore a vintage wedding gown that flowed in the coastal breeze as the duo road in on an ATV to their ceremony (a surprise to their guests as apparent by all the photos being snapped up)!

What a sophisticated way to celebrate with a small guest count – everyone in white!  “We had 2 days of storms before the wedding, but we had “faith” that we would have a beautiful day. It turned out to be blue skies with a beautiful gazebo on the beach  and the ultimate cremony with all our guests dressed in white.”

When we asked the groom what his most memorable moment was, he admitted to being a little eager to get to kiss the bride!  “Most memorable was kissing Sabrina before she said I do…. I was so eager and got the timing wrong :)”

The reception took place in the estate of Playa VIK, a wonderfully modern and artfully designed backdrop to enjoy the evening within.

For the decor?  Long tables with white paper and floral details.  “We loved the idea of a “beach theme” that would be elegant and portray a clean & fresh feel.”  Mission accomplished!

We’re loving these napkin treatments – each place setting has a different piece of the puzzle, that together say a sweet sentiment of love.

“Following the ceremony we had a traditional Uruguayan BBQ on the terrace, while overlooking an unforgettable sunset. Timeless.”

At the time, the bride and groom were living in Buenos Aires, Argentina but they have since moved to  Jose Ignacio, Uruguay – to make the location even more special, fifty of their loved ones got to see where they would later settle down post “I do.”

After dinner, guests retired to the fire pit to enjoy the evening air and great company.  Looks like a wonderful time was had by all!  Congratulations Sabrina and Ryan!

Destination Wedding in Buenos Aires

argentina destination weddingsWe’re jetting to South America for today’s ultra luxurious destination wedding! Amy and Luciano tied the knot in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a destination that held much meaning for the groom, and wasn’t too far from the couple’s residence at the time, Rio de Janeiro. I know, we’re jealous too! Luckily not only do we have photos from this timeless wedding to share but we also have their fantastic wedding video from I Do Films which will have you feeling like you were celebrating right there with them!

Luciano is from Buenos Aires so it was ideal location to hold the wedding. In fact, his parents married in the very church he and Amy did. The decor was kept simple and elegant as neither the church nor their reception venue were both so grand and exquisite on their own. Encountering a language barrier (Amy is a native English speaker, who was learning Portuguese, not Spanish, while living in Brazil!), “Luciano had to translate all of my ideas to the vendors.  He did an amazing job, but he is probably the only groom that new every tiny detail of the wedding… like what flowers were on what tables” One thing that needed no translation? How gorgeous Amy’s intricate Enzoani gown was! Swoon.buenos aires destination weddingsFrom Amy, “We chose Palacio Sans Souci because it is a family house of Luciano.   Sans Souci is now rented out for weddings and other functions, but it is also the house where his grandparents lived.  His grandmother was actually one of the first female architects in Argentina, and she loved to refurbish old homes.  When his grandparents bought Sans Souci in the mid/late 60s it was about to be demolished, and his grandmother brought it back to life.” Clean lines, gold accents and a white palette was all this venue needed to be transformed into a dream destination wedding reception.destination weddings in buenos airesIn true Argentinian tradition, “The wedding starts very late and goes ALL night.  Our ceremony was at 9pm and our party ended at 7am!  There is a section of Argentine Weddings called “Carnival Carioca.”  This happens around 3am, and is when the party really turns into a PARTY.  People put on wigs, glow rings, hats, masks…etc.  Basically really getting the fun of the party started.”  Their international guest list certainly didn’t hesitate to embrace this tradition! Luckily, the couple provided custom flip flops for them because who would want to leave a wedding like this before sunrise, anyway?

Honeymoons in Peru at Machu Picchu

honeymooning at machu picchuOn part two of our virtual trip to Peru with photographer Laura Grier of Beautiful Day Photography…she takes us to Machu Picchu!  A lifelong dream of hers to see, she gives us more insight into what a luxury meets adventure honeymoon in Peru is really like.

“There are few places in the world that offer the diversity that Peru does. In just a short time you can visit jungles, deserts, mountains, valleys, beaches, remote farmland and plains, and of course unimaginable Incan ruins. The most famous of all and the climax of our trip – Machu Picchu.  There are certain pinnacles in one’s life where they will never forget the ‘feeling’ of a place and the sense of accomplishment it took to get there; it was amazing to experience this…and then be able to go back to our luxury boutique hotel and have a nice dinner and glass of wine. “tours to machu picchu“Most people have to hike 5 days and sleep on the ground to get to Machu Picchu, but we took a First class train ride with epic scenery, and stayed at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu. This hotel exists in a world apart.  An intimate 85-cottage luxury hotel in a sprawling Andean-style village within the secluded 12 acres of exquisite beauty, where guests follow stone pathways to their rooms, located in comfortable one or two-story whitewashed casitas. I have never really allowed myself to travel in luxury.  I always felt that it took the adventure out of everything, but this trip I experienced all the adventure and beauty of Peru through ‘a trip of a lifetime’.  I came back energized, yet relaxed, more appreciative, knowledgeable, inspired, awestruck, and amazed at what all I witnessed with my own eyes.  Who says that you can’t have romance, adventure, AND luxury all at the same time?” peru honeymoonsIn addition to this adventure, Celestielle Travel also took Laura and crew to other epic places in Peru.

“We took long bus rides with breathtaking scenery just to visit some of the remote little towns and saw the most amazing people working in the fields wearing top hats and brightly woven garb out of llama wool.”honeymoon in PeruCelestielle travel plans trips thinking of adventurers and backpackers during the day, yet 5 star luxury and comfort for all of the travel, accommodations and food at night.  Every day was full of amazing tours, guides, learning and adventure, but we always did it in style and had our every need attended to.  We climbed to almost 16,000 elevation and back into Colca Canyon to see the deepest canyon in the world, sit in the volcanic hot springs under the stars after getting a massage, and then went exploring to see the 11 foot long Andean Condors; a rare sight.  Amazing!”Peru honeymoon ideasIn addition to adventures aplenty, the hotels and properties were noteworthy as well.  Laura also visited several other parts of Peru and has a list of great properties to stay at for you!luxury hotels in peruAll slightly off the beaten path or non-chain like hotels, Laura loved the boutique nature and culture of these fun places to dwell throughout your Peru travels.
