A Cute + Colorful Palm Springs Elopement

Brendan and Bec came all the way from Sydney, Australia to Palm Springs, CA for their colorful destination elopement in the desert. The couple shared with us their favorite moments of the intimate big day and how it all came to be.

We decided to elope to celebrate our ten-year anniversary together. It was a private event and we wanted to combine the elopement with a road trip around California. We set out with the principle that we would plan our elopement as if it was the best date we could ever design. We wanted somewhere that was going to be fun and chic, in a beautiful location. Palm Springs ticked all the boxes.

There are no dress rehearsals in an overseas elopement. So you just need to go with the flow and set the right expectations. For us it was to have fun with each other.  My hair, make-up and bouquet were all just what happened on the day. In our opinion everything worked out perfectly, but that was because our main objective was to have fun, rather then meet some pre-designed expectation about what a perfect wedding looked like.

A favorite moment for the couple?

Watching the sunset against the mountains after the ceremony. It was beautiful, the company was perfect and the champagne was sweet.

Set realistic expectations about what you can achieve. There will be trade-offs with how you plan things, how you want things to look and feel and who can come.  At the end of the day you choose a destination wedding because you want an adventure and adventures are meant to be full of surprises and the unexpected.

Palm Springs Wedding Location: The Parker Palm Springs

If you want a swanky place to wed in the desert of California, then your search may have just ended here.  One of our favorite places for a destination wedding in Southern California is sunny Palm Springs, and one of the best hotels in the region?  The Parker Palm Springs.  Beautifully manicured grounds, delicious cuisine, fire pits and places at every turn, a spa worth writing home about, and a retro chic style unique only to The Parker is what ultimately sets this special spot apart from the rest.

Even the front drive is memorable – a giant decorative wall that you almost tuck into to get inside and check in for a relaxing, old world experience.  Once you get past all the eye candy in the lobby (where I highly suggest you return later to enjoy a drink by the fire), your room will be nestled away in one of several buildings that you’ll get to via a secret-like winding path.  What I love about this property is that it’s not small, 144 rooms, big enough for a large wedding party, but it feels incredibly boutique, without the hustle and bustle of a large resort.  But if you want big, they’ve got that too – with reception lawns large enough to fill a small county fair (they’ve built one for a private party before, complete with rides and all!).

Weddings at The Parker have several options – outdoors under the stars of course (if it’s not too hot in the summer months), and two beautifully appointed ballroom spaces that need little else to dress them up other than the elegant decor already inside.  The Mafiya Suite, which is perfect for parties of 100 or less, has beautiful high ceilings, grand windows and drapes, and even makes for an intimate indoor ceremony site when need be.  For larger weddings, the Grand Ballroom can hold up to 200 for dinner and dancing and has a private indoor / outdoor space for when curfew calls.

The Parker has charm, sophistication, and playfulness – including a spiked lemonade stand on property with a bike and cart for poolside delivery – all that you’d want in a Palm Springs wedding.  And with so many party places on property, you’ll never have to leave when celebrating your destination wedding weekend.  Shhh…that includes the spa too!  One thing not to miss is a day at their stunning spa, which, for just the right occasion, has been known to host a party or two.

If you’re looking for a beautiful destination wedding venue in Southern California that’s kid-friendly, oodles of fun with plenty of event location options, then look no further than to Palm Desert at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa.  We had the recent pleasure of checking out the property firsthand and oh what fun!  The resort has over 465 rooms and suites to service your large (or small) party and several spectacular sites for your ceremony and reception (like this lawn overlooking a pond and the golf course).

Or perhaps perch your party atop the roof for a view of the mountains and the resort below as you dance under the stars and celebrate in total privacy!

The resort is just 20 minutes from the airport and about 20 minutes from the town of Palm Springs – for those of your guests who want to get out and explore the city, nightlife and shopping.  Of course, it’s not far from amazing shopping in Palm Desert too with great restaurants like the Tommy Bahama Restaurant to host your rehearsal dinner or post-wedding brunch if you want to get off property.

But there’s really no reason to leave!  The Omni Rancho Las Palmas has a lovely spa with a variety of amenities and services to treat you and your bridal party before and on your big day (we recommend spending the afternoon lounging at the spa pool for a little more R&R and privacy away from the other guests).

There’s also the entertaining Splashtopia waterpark on property for the kids and kids in all of you who want to float down a lazy river or splash on a few slides in the sun.  If your group has children, ask for rooms near this part of the resort.  For adults only, opt to be closer to the spa and lobby areas (which have great curb appeal and outdoor fire pits to enjoy at night with a glass of wine as you reflect on your wedding weekend).

Needless to say, the resort really has it all for a destination wedding group.  But it’s actually the team behind it all that gives this place that something extra.  Pam Olson, the resort’s Catering Sales Manager is your go-to gal for all things wedding at the resort and we promise you’ll fall in love with her too as she dedicates herself wholeheartedly to making your big day the best it can be.  You get the sense that the entire staff lives like this – with open arms, warmth, kindness and dedication to your event so no detail is left undone and no guest leaves without feeling like they’re leaving home.

Viceroy Palm Springs Destination Wedding

Karie and Joe hosted their destination wedding at the swanky Viceroy Palm Springs in Southern California.  They opted for a November wedding date – the perfect time of year for the desert region when the weather is just right, and not too hot.  We asked the darling couple how they selected the location.  “We were looking for a modern, comfortable venue at which we would be the only wedding on site the day of our wedding. It was important for us to find a contemporary venue to match our personalities.  We were also looking for something different from recent friends’ weddings that we had attended (urban, beach, Mexico, golf club, etc.) We fell in love with the Viceroy Palm Springs the moment we entered the hotel. It is this old 50’s motor lodge in the desert, which has been completely updated and redecorated to reflect the modern, chic ambiance of its clientele. The Viceroy is adorned in black, white and lemon yellow décor.  Yellow being my favorite color and the chosen color for our wedding, I knew the Viceroy would be a perfect fit.”

This couple started their destination wedding journey with a very special proposal!  “My husband Joe proposed to me at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA, over looking the beautiful Pacific Ocean.  He had reserved a suite at the resort for the night.  Dozens of yellow and red roses, lit candles and champagne for toasting adorned the hotel suite. The next morning, Joe surprised me with a family brunch at the Ritz Carlton in Marina Del Rey, CA. My parents, brothers, sisters and their spouses were there to celebrate with us.  Later that evening, the celebration continued as we flew to Kansas City, KS to visit Joe’s family.  It was one of the most wonderful, memorable times of our lives and the beginning of our lives together.”

“The ring in the bride’s bouquet was my grandmother’s ring; she passed away a few years back.  Since my grandmother couldn’t be with us at the wedding, the ring represented my something old and made us feel as though she was there with us on our special day.  The colored jewels within the ring are the birthstones of each of my family members.”

“During the unity celebration in our ceremony, we exchanged red, long stem roses instead of lighting a unity candle.  The red roses symbolized our love for each other.  Whenever things get tough, we’re supposed to give one another a red, long stem rose as an expression of our love for each other.”  Love this idea!!

When it came time to design their day, not only were their favorite things incorporated but the style of the property was important too.  “We originally wanted yellow to be the main color for our wedding.   Although, since we were marrying in November and I was having a hard time conceptualizing yellow as our main color since it is traditionally a spring/summer color.  After toying with many color options, I stumbled upon a photo shoot online of a wedding styled in yellow, raspberry and navy blue.  I loved the color combination and thought it would be a great solution to my problem. It allowed us to incorporate the rich fall colors of navy & raspberry into our wedding and still use yellow accents to match the hotel’s color scheme.”

“Once the colors were selected, I knew I wanted tablecloths with a design.  We settled on a navy blue runner with a white chain-link pattern.  The chain link pattern became the overall symbol for our wedding.  We incorporated the design into our invitations, programs, seating chart and wedding cake.”

“We loved our square lemon yellow wedding cake with the chain link design.”

And, like their his and hers chairs, the couple had a “thank you” sign to round out the night and snap a pic for a thanks to be sent later to their loved ones.

California Desert Fault Line Wedding

ca fault line wedding

Today’s intimate destination wedding took place at a rather unique location – a California fault line in the desert!  You read right guys and gals, this darling couple said “I do” to trekking out to the San Andreas fault line in Indio Hills, CA.   Even more special was that Amanda and Greg’s nuptials were planned by the groom’s sister, wedding planner Mary Sushinski of Occasions.

We asked Mary to share this happy couple’s happily ever after day with us.  “It’s not every day a planner gets a VIP wedding.  Especially when that VIP happens to be my brother, Greg.  I was honored that I was part of my big brother’s wedding day to the sweetest gal ever, Amanda.  When they told me they were going to get married I was elated!  Then when they told me they wanted to tie the knot “ON” the San Andreas Fault Line I was like this is going to be so cool!  Coolness was an understatement! Never in my 12 years of planning weddings have I ever been a part of a wedding that actually took place on the fault line.  I already knew that this wedding was going to be unlike any other and I was not disappointed.

Greg and Amanda began the day with a fun and casual photo shoot at Miramonte Resort with the A-mazing photography artistry of Jen & Nate Berggren of B&G Photography.  Everyone was so relaxed and having fun taking photos.  No rush and no pressure.

Then we took a drive to a remote area in Indio (just outside of Palm Springs) where we then took a 30 minute “Jeep Tour” into the heart of the fault line.  Hair blowing in the wind, shades on this was no ordinary drive.

I surprised Amanda with her bridal bouquet made by Jackie Combs Floral Design.  At one point Greg found a tumbleweed along the hike.  He picked it up like his pitchfork and someone shouted out that it was his “Bro-quet”  again the laughter ensued.

Along the way we discovered that what we thought were rock walls were actually the ground pushed up from the fault!  It crumbled in your hands!  We hiked/shimmied into a small canyon that was like an amphitheater. Words can’t describe it so I’m glad Jen & Nate’s photos can!

The surroundings were so peaceful and lovely and there was no one else for miles.  It took all my effort not to cry as I watched my brother and his bride exchanged vows.  By the way did I tell you I officiated the ceremony? Of course knowing my brother and Amanda they are with a big sense of humor and in the moment type of couple, decided to use their blue ring sizers because their bands weren’t ready yet and we all had a good laugh as they pulled them out to show us!

After the ceremony we took a short 200ft climb to a small mesa and the magnificent sight of the Palm Springs valley below.  After another short drive with Desert Adventures, our driver brought us to an overlook for sunset that was as far as the eye could see.  The sunset was a firework of colors from amber, fuchsia, and settling in to violet.  We sipped champagne and had a cocktail hour of cheese, fruit and nuts from the picnic basket around the campfire.

The evening concluded with an intimate dinner at The Grove Artisan Kitchen at Miramonte Resort.  It was effortless and fun! This day couldn’t be any more perfect if I tried.”
