Preppy Navy Blue + Gold Seabrook Island, South Carolina Destination Wedding

Lizzie and Scott traveled for their destination wedding from Chicago to Seabrook Island, South Carolina, a place close to their hearts. Lizzie was sweet enough to share a bit about their very special wedding experience with us. “Scott’s parents have a home on Seabrook Island and when I first visited with Scott a couple of years ago, I fell in love.  Choosing Seabrook to have our wedding was easy, we had a connection to the island and it was absolutely beautiful.”

“Scott and I wanted a smaller wedding that would allow us to spend time with our friends and family.  We essentially wanted a wedding week, not just a wedding day, surrounded with the people we love, celebrating our love and the start of our lives together. With the help of a lot of family and friends, we were able to make that happen.”

“Because the location and venue were already so breathtaking, we decided to keep the decor simple, yet elegant.”

“We wanted a very classic wedding, which is why we chose Navy and Champagne/Gold.  The design ended up being a very nautical theme, which was great for a beach wedding.  Scott knew he wanted to wear a suit versus a tux, and he looks great in Navy.  Champagne/Gold was my choice for the bridesmaids and when I saw the bridesmaid’s dresses, I fell in love with them.  They were classic and feminine, and looked great on every single one of my bridesmaids. After deciding on the suits and dresses, we kind of just went with the theme and found things we loved within that color scheme.”

“It is hard to narrow down our favorite memories from the day because we loved every minute of it!  However, if we had to narrow it down, we would have to say sharing our vows with one another, seeing each other for the first time during our “first look”, and seeing all the planning we did for a year come to life and turn out amazing.  Between the open bar and the great music by Quiana Parlor, we had everyone partying on the dance floor all night, with foam glow sticks and sunglasses.  It was a wonderful day and night with all of the people we care about the most in the world – one that we will never forget!”

“We had a very close friend officiate the ceremony for us, he wrote the whole ceremony and we wrote our own vows.  It made the ceremony very personal and unique for us.”

“Most of the decorations and details came from my inspiration with the help of my mom and sister.  We didn’t use a wedding planner, so we had a really fun time picking out table runners, plate chargers, table numbers, signs, you name it!  We picked out most of the decorations and details in advance and shipped everything from Chicago to South Carolina.  That was the biggest pain when planning from afar.  I have to give all the credit of the sunglasses and foam glow sticks to my mom, she came up with the idea for the reception and they were a HUGE hit!”

“Also, our cake was a huge hit!  It was made by a very close family friend, who came down for the wedding and made the cake in the house that we rented for the week.  It turned out phenomenal and tasted amazing!”

Hilton Head Island, SC Destination I Do

hilton head island destination

Jennifer and David said I do on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina at the sprawling Wexford Plantation Home surrounded by friends and loved ones.  The couple traveled from New York City to the low country because both the bride and groom’s families had a special love of Hilton Head and enjoyed spending summers there.

A pale pink and navy palette was the perfect blend of masculine and feminine with lush and romantic florals all around them!

When hosting a destination wedding where there’s lots of golf, it’s almost a must to take a fun photo like these maids did en route on a golf cart!

The bride wore a beautiful traditional lace wedding dress designed by Judd Waddell.

And after the “I do’s” it was off to the course for some sweet post-nuptial pics.

Their reception was peppered with pink and white and oodles of roses and hydrangeas.

The cake had the rustic ‘spooned’ look that’s become popular in recent years – like your favorite childhood cake, the back of a spoon makes it look a little more like comfort food than formal wedding cake and we love the idea!

Hilton Head Destination Wedding

hilton head island wedding

Kelly and Matt held their destination wedding on Hilton Head Island – a place near and dear to their hearts.  We asked Kelly how they landed on the location.  “My family has vacationed in Hilton Head for years and for our first vacation as a couple, I took Matt there.  He immediately fell in love with the area, as I already had been in love with it for years.  When he proposed, we knew that we wanted to get married in Hilton Head in a venue that captured that lowcountry beach feel that we love so much.  The Westin Hilton Head’s oceanfront deck, as well as a covered reception space that was set amongst the dunes, was the perfect place for what we envisioned.  With all of our friends and family coming from out of town, the Westin’s newly renovated resort not only gave us the views we wanted, but also a great place for our guests to relax and enjoy our favorite city.”

“Once we had decided upon the Westin Hilton Head as our venue, Matt and I immediately agreed upon an “upscale beach chic” feel for our wedding and driftwood came to mind.  Playing off the pale gray tones of dried driftwood with a buttercup yellow gave us an airy color combination that worked with the outdoor beach setting, and while the color combination was very on-trend, it also still conveyed that upscale feel we were going for.  We also wanted to tie in local and natural elements to the wedding and reception, from the food to the flowers, and our florist from A Floral Affair helped us incorporate local sea grasses and manzania branches (both neutral, tan tones) that would complement the existing yellow and gray color scheme. “

“Make sure you are comfortable with your photographer in advance.  Our fabulous photographers from Scott Hopkins Photography included an engagement shoot with our wedding package and it did wonders to not only help us relax in front of the cameras before we were walking down the aisle, but also to see a preview of the type of amazing photos we could expect from our wedding.”

We often ask the couple of their favorite moments from the day.  For Kelly?   Moments of laughter!  “If I had to narrow it down, I’d say that there are two moments from our wedding day that stand out in my mind as favorites.  Mid-way through the ceremony, the wonderful Reverend Joe Wadas took my hands and placed them on top of Matt’s, turned to him, and said “now Matt, notice where I have placed your hands and take this as a symbol of who always has the upper hand in your relationship”.  We both still start laughing when we talk about that part of the ceremony.  My other favorite moment was when one of my two maids of honor, my sister Katie, gave a speech about how growing up in our family of four girls, we were always called by one name “Kelly-Katie-Maggie-Molly” and we were interchangeable and viewed as the same person to any outside observer.  She welcomed Matt as her new brother and told him that from now on, it was going to be “Kelly-Katie-Maggie-Molly-Matt” as that unit of one.”

“Something that Matt and I really enjoyed doing at the time and appreciate even more now a few months down the road – Reverend Joe had us write letters to each other about a month before the wedding and then mail them, unread, to him.  He gave them back to us after incorporating portions of our letters into our ceremony.  He suggested we hold on to them as something to look back at as life goes on, to see how our relationship grows and changes, but to also see how much love was conveyed to each other at the time of our wedding.  We read them in full to each other the day after our wedding and more than a few tears were shed (on my part of course….Matt would never admit to tears!)”

“We could not have gotten our dream wedding without the fantastic Jennifer Leiti and her company, Embellished Events.  Anyone planning a destination wedding should strongly consider “splurging” for a wedding planner – someone who not only knows the area, but can suggest fabulous and trustworthy vendors within your budget that will help make your vision a reality.  Every single vendor that Jen suggested gave 110% to make our wedding day everything we wanted it to be.  In the end, this expense wasn’t a splurge at all when considering the time and cost savings she provided.  From day one, we felt confident that our wedding would turn out to be wonderful which significantly helped minimize the stress of living so far away.”

Destination Wedding on Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Kiawah Island, SC beach wedding

Trudy and Sean (and 150 of their closest friends and family) traveled from Denver to Kiawah Island, South Carolina for a colorful and oh-so personal destination wedding.  We asked Trudy about their decision making process and here’s what she shared.  We fell in love with Kiawah Island the first time we visited. We spent our first Christmas together there and have gone back every year since. It is such a magical place. We decided on The Sanctuary because of its breathtaking views of the ocean. The Grand Lawn, where the ceremony was held, is one of the most beautiful places on earth. When you stay at The Sanctuary you truly feel like you are at home and we wanted our guests to feel the same way.”  A place of personal meaning and beautiful backdrops!

destination wedding welcome bags

What’s a destination wedding without matching welcome bags for all the guests?!  These goodies included a note of gratitude from the couple, a weekend schedule, snacks and even custom beer koozies!

destination wedding welcome bag ideas

“I wanted to incorporate a South Carolina theme. My friend who is a graphic designer in Denver created a monogram with our initials and a palmetto tree that was included in the wedding details.  She also designed our hang tags that said “welcome to the low country,” a welcome letter, koozies, and wedding weekend schedule, which were part of the bags guests received upon arrival. Small details such as these made me feel like the wedding was something I created.”

The bridesmaids wore bright pink dresses hung on custom hangers for each of Trudy’s favorite gals.

This wedding day was one that fate decided long ago.“Sean and I met in our first class as undergrads at James Madison University in 2002. We never dated seriously in college, but we always knew there was something special between us. This was confirmed when our paths coincidentally crossed a little over a year after graduation when Sean was visiting friends in Washington, DC. I was living there at the time and we ran into each other thanks to a mutual friend. Eight months later, we packed up my car, waved goodbye to my mom and Nanny, and started the cross-country trip to Denver, Colorado, where Sean lived.

We got engaged three years later in Vail. The weekend of our engagement was one of the most special weekends of my life. Sean flew in my mom, his parents, all of his brothers and his sister in law so they could share the exciting news with us.”

We asked the bride what inspired this bright and cheerful color palette? A perfect mix of her favorite things and the holiday (they wed on St. Patrick’s Day)!  The green was a given because we got married on St. Patrick’s Day. Pink is my favorite color, so I decided to keep it simple and use pink and green as the dominant colors. I knew I wanted the bridesmaid dresses to be pink because they would pop against the green grass on the Grand Lawn, the location of the ceremony.”

We love this first look!  They look like they are already having so much fun.  A perfect match.

With a wedding date rich in Irish tradition, it was fitting that their wedding was too.  “We have strong family ties to Ireland, especially my husband’s family. His grandparents are first generation immigrants.  We didn’t want to get married during the summer because of the heat and humidity in the south, so St. Patrick’s Day was our first choice for a wedding date. We were thrilled that it was available.”

“The ceremony was the most memorable part of our wedding for both of us. My mom walked me down the aisle, which was a very special memory for me and Sean was led into the ceremony by a bag piper, which was very moving given his Irish roots. We were both very nervous about the weather because we got married outside and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.”

“We wanted our wedding to be a weekend spent with our closest family and friends. Given that Kiawah Island and The Sanctuary are such beautiful places on their own, I didn’t want to add too much to take away from the natural setting.”

“I wanted the wedding to be a representation of us and I did this by designing and creating the table numbers and place cards (thanks to my creative mother-in-law).”

Words of wisdom for future destination couples?  “Do your research! I only took three trips to Kiawah during the planning of my wedding and I set up meetings with vendors back to back. Due to limited time, I could only meet with a couple photographers, florists, etc. Doing extensive research on the vendors before I got there helped me weed out those that I knew I wouldn’t like and I could make the best use of my time there by meeting with those that I knew were reputable.”
