Orange + Grey NYC Destination Wedding

new york city weddings

Lauren and Adam had a domestic destination wedding in the Big Apple, where the bride had many ties.  Their wedding photographer, Carly Fuller shared a little insight into this fun-loving couple.  “These two met through work and fell for each others values, playful qualities, laughter, and adventurous spirits while meeting in different cities across the cross country.”

But no distance could keep this couple apart! Lauren moved from New York City to San Francisco to be with Adam. And the two would later return to NY to tie the knot with this fashion-forward, fabulous fete!

destination wedding

In the spirit of their destination wedding, airline tickets acted as the “boarding passes to the wedding reception.”

The colors the couple selected were bright and bold – pops of oranges, yellows, and reds paired with these stunning bridesmaid dresses in shades of grey.

We love that each maid rocked her own signature look and each one looked amazing in their gowns.

Orange heels tied the party together, as did coordinating bouquets.  What a great look!  We just can’t get enough of the fabulous fashion from this big day!

The traditional Jewish wedding took place at the India House Club in Manhattan.

And when saying “I do” in the city, a photo session in the streets is certainly on the schedule!

It’s the personal, little details that are often most remembered by guests and this cake topper is no exception.  With two airplanes going back and forth from SFO and JFK airports, Lauren and Adam’s love story was told at every turn.

A Rustic Outdoor I Do in High Falls, New York

high falls wedding locations

Jessica and Edward knew what they were looking for when they began their destination wedding location search and when they landed in High Falls, NY – they knew they were home for the big day.  Jessica shared with us their story.  “We spent a lot of time researching places. I actually don’t remember how I stumbled upon Shadowlawn. But we were looking for a barn wedding close to NYC without being too close. They were such a pleasure to work with and the location was simply gorgeous. We couldn’t have asked for more.”

“Our favorite moment was going to take photos in the field after our ceremony and our first dance.”

We took 9 months to plan this wedding and it was pretty easy going. I would definitely recommend trying to add something personal to the day so your guests feel loved and thought about. We added the lawn games just for that! We had family flying in from the UK and Canada and wanted them to feel at home.”

Advice for others?  “Stay focused on what the day is about. Everything else will fall into place if the only priority you have is marrying your fiance with all your family and friends there.”

For the favors, this couple got really creative (and personal)!  “Our friends have a rooftop hive in Brooklyn, so we jarred it from them! We felt it matched the theme of the day and was a little more personal.”

NYC Destination Proposal

This post isn’t a destination wedding, but a destination proposal!!  Dan popped the question in a surprise adventure to New York City with his now fiance, Kailen.  The Seattle based couple had a vacation planned for the big apple so Dan set out to surprise Kailen on arrival.  Since photography is so important to Kailen, Dan even flew out wedding photographer Rebecca Ellison to capture every intimate moment!  Rebecca shared with us a bit about the trip and their experience.  “Since Dan and Kailen have been good friends of mine for a couple of years, I jumped at the idea of capturing such a special moment for them, and I couldn’t wait to see the reaction on Kailen’s face when she realized my husband and I were there as well.”

“Dan and Kailen have been friends of mine for years, and I knew how much Kailen had been wanting Dan to propose. She had squirreled it out of him that something was going to happen before the end of the year, and I spoke with her a day or two before their trip. She was convinced he was going to propose at sunrise on the Brooklyn Bridge because he had specified wanting to do that during the trip. I had to play dumb knowing that the proposal would happen on the trip, but not how she thought it would happen. That was a hard conversation, being a supportive friend, but not sharing what I knew, especially not that I would be there too!”

“Dan had traveled to NYC quite a few times for work and he loved the fountain at the middle of Bryant Park with the public library behind it. It is a super small but intimate park in the middle of downtown Manhattan, just blocks from Times Square.  Dan had chosen this park months in advance, but didn’t realize until the week before the trip that the park completely transforms during winter into an outdoor fair for the holidays and a huge ice rink covering the majority of the park. Luckily since his main interest was the fountain, we were still able to capture the proposal there, we just had to work around a significant amount more people than expected on a cold Saturday morning (people got on that ice rink really really early!)”new york engagement ideasnyc engagement idea

After taking the subway the wrong direction, this early morning call time for the soon to be bride and groom was delayed.  But finally the photographer got the long awaited text message from Dan saying they had arrived at the fountain.  Rebecca remembers the moment.  “My heart starts to race. Not only did I want to make sure I captured the proposal without interference, I was so excited as Kailen and Dan are good friends, and I know she was about to be over the moon happy.  All of a sudden I see Dan. I use my human shields to make sure Kailen doesn’t see me and get to a good vantage point.  Dan gives Kailen a coin to toss into the fountain, and tries to get the ring out of his pocket, but Kailen tosses the coin too fast and he doesn’t have time to drop to one knee before she looks back. So he does it in front of her, and she starts to cry. I am furiously clicking away!  She obviously says an ecstatic yes, and then after a couple minutes of hugs and kisses, Dan turns to me and points me out of the crowd.  It takes her a second (because she obviously thinks I am across the country) but finally sees me… and starts to tear up again.  It was perfect!”

“We had all of Saturday and Sunday to spend with Dan and Kailen roaming around NYC and photographing them for their engagement photos. It is by far the most fun engagement session I have ever photographed in my career! We hit up Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Terminal, Subway Stations, and multiple other random spots throughout NYC.”

Destination Wedding in Montauk, NY

Montauk NY weddingJackie & Michael wed in late September of last year in Montauk Long Island.  Michael described the special meaning of their venue selection.  “We met on the beach and always have had a special connection to the ocean. When we moved back from San Diego, we knew we wanted to get married on the beach. As a child I would go out to Montauk every summer and when we saw Gurneys we just knew it was perfect for us.”  But what was really special about their event was how personal each and every little detail was to them.  From a handmade ceremony structure to salt representing places of importance to them, this duo expressed themselves wholeheartedly throughout their big day.Montauk beach weddingsA bright color palette of orange (Jackie’s favorite color) and white was used throughout the day and pieces of driftwood acted as the accent to most of the decor.

The couple opted to make their own escort cards reflecting the locale.  As Michael described, “Mixing sand from Montauk (where I have my summer house) and Ocean City, NJ (where Jackie is from), these little mini jars were made by Jackie’s mother and myself.”  What a perfect way to welcome guests to their union!orange and white weddingsThe ceremony arch was quite personal and special as well. Michael built it himself out of driftwood found near their beach house.  “Collected over a two day span, I walked all the wood from the beach back to my house. I used the help of my father, brother, and my brother in law to put it together with screws and wire.”  It takes a village!  And what a beautiful and special end result!montauk weddingMichael even got involved in the decor process.  He shared with us how the table names came to be.  “Since Jackie and I met in San Diego and spent the first 3 years of our relationship there, we felt it was only fitting to name the tables after important San Diego landmarks/spots. On my last trip there, I revisited all the locations and snapped the pictures that went into the picture frames.”orange and white weddingThen they danced the night away with friends and family inside at Gurney’s Inn, their reception location.montauk wedding vendorsAnd for a longer peek into the big day of Michael and Jackie, take a look at Michael Justin Film’s highlight video:
