Pretty in Purple Beach Wedding in the Dominican Republic

Julie and Jake wed on the beach in the Dominica Republic as friends and families (and even boats passing by) were witness to their nuptials. The couple shared their story with us and why pair opted for a destination wedding to begin with…

We knew we wanted to do a destination wedding because, in all honesty, we both have such humongous families that we just wouldn’t be able to afford a wedding in America. That being said, we also didn’t want people who to “just come for the food and open bar.” Those who really wanted to celebrate our love would literally cross the ocean for us.

We went for a rustic beach theme, with colors Ancient Violet, Hummingbird Blue, and Elegant Charcoal.

Favorite moment from the day?

“We both agree it definitely was the First Look, which is funny because we weren’t even completely sold on doing one!? We didn’t want to ruin the “butterflies” of seeing each other for the first time at the aisle, but WE ARE SO HAPPY we did it.

I loved it because it was an intimate moment that Jake and I got to share with just the two of us (and our wedding party overlooking from a distance). We took our time and enjoyed just “being” in the moment. It was overwhelming, but in a good way.

DIY just might be my middle name. I love doing arts and crafts, and I knew if I ever got married, I would definitely be making a bunch of my own elements. I made my own Save-The-Dates, helped in every design element of our wedding invitations, designed our welcome & thank you cards. I also made the boutonnieres for the groomsmen/godfathers/fathers, corsages for the godmothers/mothers, bouquets for the bridal party, and my most favorite DIY element of all, my bouquet. I drew inspiration for it on Pinterest and couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The combination of imagination, love and hard work is a pretty wondrous thing!

We don’t regret anything because we are firm believers that everything happens just as it’s meant to. So whatever happened, was perfect. If you’re one to sweat the little things, DON’T! If anything goes wrong, i.e. a party boat passing by on the water BLASTING obnoxious music as your saying your vows (yes, this happened to us), everyone will still remember it as being the “best wedding” they’ve ever been to, which we hear all the time!

Our favorite part of wedding week was the boat party the day after the wedding! In lieu of wedding favors and welcome gifts, we opted to pay for a private excursion on the Sanael for all of our guests. It was a large party boat with drinks, food, and music. They took us out to snorkel and swim in this natural pool, and partied/danced with us all along the way. There wasn’t one person who wasn’t smiling or having a great time, and absolutely everyone raved about it (even until this day!). The wedding stress was all gone, and we were all able to just let loose.

Love deeply and fully, and remember it isn’t about the small things; it’s about who you’re standing at the altar with and all the people there to witness the unfolding of the beginning of a fantastic journey of a love.

Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Sweet Punta Cana Destination Wedding on the Beach

Jessica and Barry tied the knot in a beautiful destination wedding in the Dominican Republic.  With friends and loved ones by their side, they said “I do” in an idyllic spot that was picture-perfect for them.  Blushing bride Jessica shared with us the story of their big day.

We chose Punta Cana because it is stunningly beautiful. The water is sparkling blue, the sand is pure white, and the sunsets are breathtaking.

We were aiming for a relaxed bohemian vibe. The bridesmaids were mismatched because we wanted the styling to look organic but cohesive. We paired the turquoise blue with cream to tie the decor together in a natural way.

Our favorite part of the day was dancing the night away with our friends and family. The bistro lights strung up over the beach made the perfect setting for an amazing dance party.

Advice for other destination wedding couples? My best advice is to arrive at your destination a few days ahead of your guests. It allows you to attend all the meetings to finalize plans, visit the events locations, and chat with your wedding planner without missing any quality time with your loved ones.

Planning a destination wedding can be challenging because you make your decisions without ever actually seeing the location or decor. Trust your wedding planner. They know what’s needed to create an unforgettable experience.

The ceremony was our most favorite part because it was so special to us for us to be able to become a family and to have everyone we love in one place!  We also loved crazy hour!! We love being silly and it was seriously so much fun!! It made our wedding so unique!

The “I DO” light up sign was something that Huracan offered and we are so glad we used it because we love all the pictures! Almost every guest used it for some photo ops and created so many fun memories! Besides, no one else we know has had something that unique!

We asked the couple for advice for future destination brides and grooms: Once you pick your location, trust the wedding coordinator and do not sweat the details. I was able to fully enjoy the planning process. I think that the reason of having a destination wedding is to keep it small and intimate so you can enjoy every minute of the day and since you are planning from afar the little things are out of your control! Trust that the coordinators know what they are doing and soak in every second bc it goes by sooo fast!

And for the honeymoon? For our honeymoon, we switched resorts and stayed in Punta Cana for a few more days. We are glad we did because we didn’t have to have the hassle of traveling more and could actually relax and soak everything in!

Colorful Beach Destination Wedding in Punta Cana

Melissa and Edwin wed on the beach at a beautifully colorful destination wedding in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The couple shared with us the story of how the location, and the big day came to be.

Both of our families are from the Dominican Republic so it was a no brainer for us! We visited Punta Cana right after we got engaged and put down a deposit right away. We couldn’t wait to get married in paradise and be able to incorporate many elements of our Dominican culture.

We handwrote our own vows in personalized vow books. Needless to say, the vows were super emotional and everyone was crying as we read them. Edwin provided some comedic relief by including that he would always share his French Fries with me for as long as we both lived.

Edwin also made me a beautiful personalized book “The story of our love” as my wedding gift that had all the things he loves about me. I gifted him a personalized watch box with a brand new watch that he had been eyeing for years and never purchased.

We had many personal touches. Each guest was given a mini beach ball upon arrival to our venue and instructed to keep it until after the ceremony. Our friends and family threw the mini beach balls into the air (not at us) as we walked back down the aisle as husband and wife. We did a unity sand ceremony using sand that matched our wedding colors to symbolize us joining our lives as one.

We also honored our close family members that have passed with a collage frame on our welcome table that said “Share a toast with…” and had all of their pictures.

Each table for our reception was named after a place that held significance for us and our relationship. There was a frame at each table with details on the location, a map, and why it was special to us on our journey as a couple.

Our first dance as husband and wife. We did a three song medley of “Never Felt This Way” by Alicia Keys, “Mi Corazoncito” by Aventura and “Poision” by Bell Biv DeVoe. No one knew that we had choreographed moves and that we were mixing different songs. It was the perfect mix of emotion, Dominican culture, and fun! The first dance ended with cold fire sparklers illuminating the dance floor and our guests were wowed!

Beach Destination Wedding in Punta Cana, DR

punta cana destination wedding

Bianca and Matthew were married in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, a place near to their hearts and just what they had in mind! Bianca shared their wedding story with us and how it came to be on the beach that day.

“Matt and I always knew we wanted a destination wedding, but narrowing down the destination was the hard part! Originally, we were set on Switzerland (I’m originally from Basel, Switzerland and have always envisioned a Swiss wedding), however it didn’t end up fitting the image we had for our big day. We actually ended up with Punta Cana completely by accident! One day while searching for destination weddings and wedding blogs, I found this beautiful, beach front, off-resort wedding held at the Jellyfish Restaurant. At the time, I had no idea where it was, if they did weddings often, etc. I just knew I absolutely loved the feel of this venue; and I emailed it to Matt immediately saying, “I think this is it… I don’t know where it is, but this is it!”

The DR does hold a special place in my heart. My family and I have been traveling to the island for years and we have a vacation house in another city on the island. I love the Dominican culture and they are some of the friendliest, most welcoming people I have ever encountered.

…Luckily, we had a trip to Punta Cana planned for a few months later, and while there were able to visit the restaurant and meet with their staff and the rest was history.”

“My colors for the day were all neutrals (whites, creams, beige, and browns) with the accent color being green to bring just a pop of brightness and color to the mix. My coordinator/decorator brought together all the natural and rustic elements and combined it with tons of fresh white flowers with green accents to pull the vision together.”

“We incorporated aspects of both Christianity and Judaism in our ceremony (readings and the breaking of the glass). We also included some foreign languages into our vows (German, Hebrew, and Spanish) to tie together our cultures as well as that of the DR.

We also had a friend officiate the ceremony for us, which brought a very personal and unique feel to it (more in another section below).”

“The 2 biggest challenges we experienced while planning were 1) the language barrier, both Matt and I speak and understand some Spanish but when it comes to planning a wedding and having specific ideas and desires, it definitely wasn’t easy and we had to rely on pictures… A LOT. 2) Island time is a real thing… and for a fast pace east coast couple, island time is very tough to adjust to.”

beach wedding dresses

“Since all planning was done by e-mail, and a few skype dates, we often had to wait a while to hear back. Also, we booked our date 1.5 years in advance but then we did the majority of the planning and decision making in the final 3 months… which seems crazy in comparison to our friends getting married here and planning for a year in advance. It definitely required calming yoga classes and wine nights with bridesmaids during the stressful or freak out times when I felt that there was no way I would be able to get it all done in 3 months!”

“Our vision or theme was “Earthy, Beach Chic” – yes, it is a real thing, haha! I envisioned a ton of natural elements, like driftwood, palm leaves, sand, shells, starfish, and tropical plants, and mixed it with rustic things, like burlap, lace, and ribbon.”

shell wedding details

“Rather than having 1 large floral arrangement per table, she used several smaller vases and bottles filled with small arrangements or even single blooms and mixed that together with elements like starfish, shells, wood, etc. to create large and elaborate table decorations. I thought that was the most incredible part of all the decor; it made it special and unique and felt so much like “us”.

“Our actual wedding day was from about 4:00pm until 3:00am! And our guests danced and enjoyed themselves through the whole night. For us, the food, bar, and entertainment was most important because we wanted everyone to have a great time after travelling all that way for our wedding. We offered a menu with several meal choices, appetizers, hors devours, and a full bar and signature cocktails. We also had 3 wedding cakes of different flavors and a midnight fruit buffet for those still going strong on the dance floor.”

“The entertainment included an electric violinist during cocktail hour, a DJ during the party and also the fire show in the middle of the reception. The amazing thing was watching all of our guests, young and old, having an absolute blast on the dance floor and on the beach just dancing up a storm all night long. Even now, a year later, our friends and family still tell Matt and me what an amazing time they had and how much they enjoyed our wedding… most of friends want a redo every year!”
